VINTAGE REPRODUCTIONS

Tyrone Geter’s Rediscovered Heritage collection delves into cultural identity, focusing on the Fulani people during his formative years in Nigeria (1980–1987). The series celebrates the serene strength of the Fulani herders while reflecting Geter’s deep connection to his own heritage.

Through vivid portraits and evocative scenes, Geter captures the dignity and daily life of the Fulani, showcasing their bond with the land and livestock. Traditional Nigerian art forms inspire the vibrant colors and patterns, blending cultural specificity with universal themes of resilience and connection.

After decades in storage, Rediscovered Heritage re-emerges as a testament to the power of cultural dialogue. This collection not only offers an intimate glimpse into the Fulani world but also marks a cornerstone of Geter’s artistic journey, highlighting art’s role in preserving and celebrating diverse narratives.

Tyrone,
I just got the good news that your painting passed muster (the Collections Committee and the Board) and is being acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  Because the painting overlaps two departments (Contemporary and American), several curators had to first sign off, then the committee, then the board.  EVERYBODY loves your painting!  So, you can officially add the MFA to your list of public collections.

On another note, I was one of the proofreaders of the John Wilson publication.  I loved seeing that your reflections are included, and I also thought what you wrote about John captured his quiet dignity.

I hope you will be coming to Boston to see the exhibition, and if so, that you will look me up.  I am also opening a John Wilson show in my gallery opening February 15, but will be hung by the opening of the MFA's show.

Happy New Year,
Martha | Curator and owner of the Richards Gallery, | Boston, MA
